The artwork in “Cawing”…Transformative Power focuses on Robin Przybysz’s fascination with crows (her ‘spirit animal’), bones, and their symbolic meanings. Przybysz’s contemporary fiber art studio practice consists of wrapping, coiling, and stitching her materials into a continuous line contour of sculptural forms. Visit to learn more about the artist's influences and approaches.

More details…
Mesquite Street Amigos is an informal organization of associates, neighbors, and friends interested in promoting the preservation of cultural lifeways in the Mesquite Street Original Townsite District. In 2024, they got together to create a years’ worth of outreach events, tours, and depictions celebrating the City’s 175th anniversary.
On Saturday morning, November 2, 2024, there will be chalk replica of the 1849-53 Plat of the Las Cruces Original Townsite on the basketball court at Klein Park. The plat will have the streets, the blocks, the church, the plaza, the cemetery, etc...labeled as they are on the original plat.
At 11:00 AM they will start the event ceremony with a blessing from, and land acknowledgement to, local Piro-Manso-Tewa, and other indigenous tribal members, as they are the first inhabitant peoples represented.
The main act of this performance art is an audience-engaged representation of the founding of Las Cruces in an artistic-set piece. Actors will portray the founding of our city by Doña Ana Alcalde Don Pablo Melendrez, along with Lieutenant Delos B. Sackett and calvary who platted and staked the Original Townsite of Las Cruces in 1849. An Emcee/ Conductor/ and Narrator will relate historical anecdotes, events and subsequent history of Las Cruces.
As the finale, people will be called to literally occupy their original home sites on the chalked plat map and to stand on their lot, as successive residents are called to the map in 25-year increments.* They will start with pre-1849 and the 1850’s Los Primeros (the First Founding Charter citizens of Las Cruces).
The closing of the ceremony is a Farewell/Despedida to the departed spirits in a celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Participants are encouraged to stay through the afternoon for music, ballet folklorico dancing, a no-host picnic, as well as personal remembrances, and reflections on the community altar.
This is an educational opportunity to commemorate the individual and collective heritage of the first families, and to acknowledge the contributions, diversities, and continuity of those who now live in the Original Townsite, Mesquite Street Historic District. Reverent reflection of past lives is expected, but the event focus is to revitalize memories and energies of the people who chose and choose to live along the Camino Real. This intergenerational, family event will strive to be FUN for all.
*To accommodate residents that can’t stand the entire 25 minutes, there will be chairs for them to be seated at their Block/Lot.
